The International Drinking Season Has Begun!
April First, widely known as Fool’s Day, is Opening Day of the International Drinking
Season. It was Earnest Hemingway who said it best, “An intelligent man is
sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools.”
Such is truth, wisdom, and a line worth toasting.
To launch the new season and encourage worldwide camaraderie among the drinking class, we have established the ScapeGoat Ink Drinking Team and set upon a mission: the creative exploration of mixed drinks. To become better acquainted with our greatest creative ally—alcohol—we will post and enjoy ONE NEW DRINK A WEEK FOR 52 WEEKS STRAIGHT, launching the week ofApril 1, 2008 .
From then on, we will post each week’s recipe at the end of the weekend.
How elaborate do we intend to get? Open any solid bar bible and you will discover a staggering selection of mixed potables. We want to keep the mixes plausible for anyone operating from a healthy home bar. We promise that recipes requiring 12 ingredients that include Cointreau, Calvados, or Galliano, will be kept to a minimum. We have distilled the list to a simple array of recipes for which we can make substitutions. For some help in stocking the home bar with the most versatile alcohols, peruse "The Essential Home Bar" among articles continually added to our Booze University web page.
WEEK 1:
Gorilla Tit
1/3 dark rum
1/3 bourbon
1/3 coffee liqueur
Add a shot of each into a shaker with ice and make them mingle. Strain into an Old-fashioned glass with ice.
Potent and delicious, this drink offers a nice transition into a new season. Try a few combinations. Our first try was Bullett bourbon, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Sailor Jerry spiced rum—a fine mix. You can get creative with each brand of liquor. We highly recommend Gosling’s Black Seal Bermuda Black Rum (a bottle we intend to incorporate into many future drink recipes) and Kahlúa for coffee liqueur, and Bullet bourbon. You can use all kinds of bourbon and the taste will differ, but save the top-shelf for drinking straight. A rougher liquor can be smoothed out with the right combination, but an expensive one might lose some of the flavor in the mix. Cheers!
Check back weekly for each new drink. You can subscribe and become an Official Member of the ScapeGoat Ink Drinking Team.

At first I was a little leery about a drink named after a Gorilla's flapjacks, but once you get past the hair it's pretty damn good. Just kidding, I know the hair wasn't part of the recipe...but I added it anyway. Gross! Anyway, keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing all members at the finish line in April '09.

Thanks for the comment. We're pleased you enjoyed the drink* and we look forward to seeing YOU at the finish line in '09.
Cheers,

*To any other readers out there, do not, under any circumstances, add hair to this drink. It will not enhance the flavor in any way.
