Breakfast Anyone?
Of the Mixologist's Main 5, we are not often champions of vodka. Vodka seldom offers more than alcohol to the flavor of any mix (but sometimes that's just what the barfly ordered.) While there is not yet a cure for a hangover, this is the next best thing for replenishing some of those lost minerals and sodium, fulfilling your recommended vegetable quota, and for reviving abused taste buds.
WEEK 5:
Bloody Mary
2 oz vodka
4 oz tomato juice (or to taste)
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/4 tsp. horseradish
2 - 3 dashes Tabasco sauce
2 - 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
Lemon wedge
Celery stick
Pour all ingredients into a shaker full of ice and shake vigorously. Strain the mixture into an ice-filled highball glass. Squeeze lemon juice over the top and drop in the wedge. Garnish with the celery stalk. There's no shame in pouring them all over ice and stirring with a celery stalk.
This beauty affords so many ingredient variations and related recipes, the taste combinations are seemingly infinite. The key is lot's of spice. Use V8 instead of tomato juice—especially Spicy V8. Add finely ground pepper and celery salt for an added kick, skip the horseradish if you're out, add more Tabasco or swap it with any number of hot sauces available. You can replace the lemon with lime, or lose it all together. But Worcestershire sauce (pronounced WOOS-ter-sher) is a necessity, and we at ScapeGoat Ink heartily recommend Lea & Perrins. (We hear it's pretty good on steak, too.)
