Girl Scouting For Adults
Not what you're thinking, you pervert, but read on...
WEEK 27:
Mint Condition
3/4 ounce bourbon
3/4 ounce peppermint schnapps
3/4 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce KahlĂșa
Combine all the ingredients in an ice-filled shaker and make it as cold as you can.
Peppermint schnapps is an ideal mixer, in moderation, and if you have creme de menthe on hand, it will suffice for this and just about every other drink calling for minty flavoring. That said, the bourbon can be rotgut or the finest recipe on your shelf, but it is likely to be drowned out by the peppermint flavor, so we won't criticize if you set aside the good stuff for later. Such is the way with most cocktails. We used Gentleman Jack for the bourbon—-a good sip on it's own—-and it was all but lost in this particular drink. As for vodka, whether Grey Goose or Hawkeye (U. of Iowa fans, anyone?), you will be equally satisfied with the result in this combination libation, but on the whole, we confess to be of the mind that vodka is vodka, flavorless through and through. Sure you can lessen the burn, but is it worth the extra coin for the top shelf brands? Not in a cocktail. Finally, the key to this fancy glassful is the KahlĂșa, with its chocolate-coffee overtones which put the overbearing peppermint in line with the rest of the booze for a flavor reminiscent of the Girl Scouts' famous Thin Mints—-except that this drink is cheaper than $5 a box (if you make your own), lower in calories (as if you care,) and satisfyingly stronger. Happy scouting!
