Whiskey + Bacon = Awesome

I was dreaming the other night that I was in a forest made up of bacon trees (presumably heaven) where every branch and every bush was full of bacon, ready for the plucking. I was grabbing handfuls of the sizzling pork goodness and shoving it in my mouth while filling my satchel (I always carry a satchel when I'm in Bacon Forest) to capacity, as I was skipping down a central path with glee (Let it be known that I never skip, unless I have a satchel full of bacon.). Then, I heard something in the near distance, like a bubbling creek, to the right of the path. I pondered for a moment whether I should deviate from the crispy, salty, safety of the bacon tree path and venture off to discover what the noise was and where it was coming from. My curiosity bested me. I took a few steps off the path toward the noise. I couldn't see through the hanging bacon, so I followed my ears.

Just ahead, I noticed something through the crispy, swine-flavored foliage. It looked like a river flowing forth of liquid gold. What could that possibly be, I wondered? As I approached the liquid I realized it was a cascading river, which could quench my ever-growing thirst from the handfuls of bacon dancing in my mouth. I knelt beside this mysterious river, and dipped my hand in to bring the refreshing liquid to my mouth. Before I could sip, the unmistakable scent hit my nostrils with a slight burn. I was elated! I plunged both hands in to gather more to carry to my mouth. This was no ordinary river of average water; instead this river flowed with the nectar of life—whiskey. I woke up drunk, satisfied, and 20 lbs. heavier, but it was totally worth every hour of dreaming.

Have I piqued your interest? Good, because Irish Oaks, 3511 N. Clark St., has an alcohol and food pairing every second Thursday of the month. This Thursday, November 10, just happens to be whiskey and bacon!!! As you can tell by my excessive use of exclamation points, I'm pretty excited. According to Irish Oak's Web site, "The pairings change every month to keep your pallets excited about the next event." That means that this may be your only chance at this magnificent coupling. So, starting at 7:30, you get to taste five Johnnie Walker's paired with five bacon-infused foods, all for $35. Click here to purchase tickets for this event. They also offer private tastings for parties of 15 or more.

In other news, former heavyweight champion, Smokin' Joe Frazier, lost his battle with liver cancer last night at the age of 67. He was a class act when the sport of boxing was lacking one. ESPN Classic will be holding a 24-hour tribute to Frazier and his legacy, featuring highlights from the epic fight where he became the first boxer to defeat Muhammad Ali. I'll be raising a glass in honor of Smokin' Joe. ScapeGoat Ink salutes you!
